Welcome to beautiful Bonanza, Colorado.  Once you cross these gates leave all of your worries behind.  With scenery, wildlife, and for the more adventurous type there is four-wheeling that is second to none.

History

Just a few minutes off Highway 285 from Villa Grove, you will enter Kerber Creek Country.  It is said that a group of soldiers, who received land in exchange for service in the Army, first settled this area.  One of the soldiers, Captain Kerber, gave the creek his name.  They lived peacefully in this valley raising families, growing crops, and trading with the friendly Ute Indians.
Then one day a silver strike was made in the surrounding hills.  Once the word got out, miners came by the thousands.  Eventually, the town of Bonanza emerged above the existing towns of Sedgewick and Kerber City.
The Bonanza Inn is built on a site which was once called Parkville.  This little community was created at the mouth of U.S. Gulch, just above a big smelter which has since fallen to ruin.  One of the finest cabins of its day once stood near the site of the inn.
The old two story homestead, just north of the inn, was the home of the late Helen Ashley Anderson Kempner for most of her life.  She loved this area so much and worked very hard to preserve the history.  She was very active with the museum which is located nearby in the town of Saguache.  She wrote several books and a big part of her collection of rocks and minerals are on display at the museum.
Just follow the Forest Service signs for breathtaking views, a glimpse of the past and an occasional sighting if the many animals and birds that reside in this area.
